Home Gardener Program
What is the Home Gardener Program?
We’re building a network of home gardens to increase access to fresh food, teach practical skills, and strengthen local resilience.
Whether you’re brand new to gardening or ready to expand your knowledge, we’re here to support your learning journey.
Applications are due March 30th, 2026.
Through our Home Gardener Program, Mitchell Giving Gardens helps local residents grow food at home. Each year, we supply 25 households with a raised bed kit and educational support including:
soil & mulch
seasonal plant starts & seeds
educational opportunities and mentorship support throughout the growing season
In exchange, participants are required to remain active in the program by participating in community work days, meeting program deadlines, and maintaining their home garden.
This program was initiated with support from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina in response to community recovery needs after Hurricane Helene.
Who Should Apply
Anyone with the desire to grow food at home.
We welcome first-time gardeners and those with some experience who want to expand their skills.
We prioritize low-income and food insecure households, families with children, and seniors who want to grow their own food but may face barriers to getting started.
Individuals and families of all experience levels
Schools, churches, nonprofits, and community groups
Households across Mitchell County
Kits are provided at no-cost to participants. The Home Gardener Program is made possible by generous funders. Donations are accepted and keep the program thriving. If you are able, please donate to sponsor a home garden!
Participant Requirements
The Home Gardener Program is hands-on and community-centered and requires active engagement. To participate, all accepted gardeners agree to the following:
Maintain your home garden bed and use organic growing practices to the best of your ability.
Document your garden installation and share photos with us via email or social media.
Volunteer at least four days in the Mitchell Giving Gardens at Riverside Park during the growing season.
Attend a minimum of two educational events or workshops hosted by MGG.
Share your abundance whenever possible — with friends, neighbors, or a local food pantry.
These requirements provide accountability, help sustain the program, and strengthen our shared goal of growing food and connection throughout Mitchell County.
Applications are due March 30th, 2026.
